Partners In Health has been involved with Haitian health care development (both mental health and physical health) for the past 20 years, developing pilot programs to combat what have been thought of as "lost cause" epidemics such as AIDS and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, among other ills. In many cases, these pilots have become standardized success stories and, when possible, replicated in other needy international communities. PIH's holistic approach to developing health care stresses education, primary health care access, economic needs, community involvement and public sector legitimization. In short, they are involved at all levels of developing health care programs for those who have virtually nothing. Their worldwide staff of 11,000 relies heavily on donations and Tools For Thought: Rebuild Haiti has been created to harness the generosity of the contemporary art community — both its collectors and practitioners — to help Partners In Health and the devastated people of Haiti.
